My first question is How effective is phase 1 of Medifast Diet? Many thanks for any answer or 2. 2nd question I got is.. For those of you who are newbies, NSV stands for non-scale victory. These are the little victories that arise on the journey of weight-loss that have nothing to do with the number on your scale. Lately, mine tend to be on the periphery of weight-loss, more in the getting healthy and fit category. Seeing others' NSV's is very motivating, and I'm needing some motivation on this snowy Wednesday. |
Good question... I dunno what is the right answer. I'll do some Googling and get back to you if I discover an decent answer. You should email the people at Medifast as they probably could give you help..

EMT I am soooo happy for you! Quitting smoking while you are staying on plan is a huge huge huge accomplishment! And awesome on the 100% pass rate!! New year, new you has never been truer!!!..
Went over to a different depatment at work today to see a friend/co-worker that I had not seen since before the holidays (about 3 weeks ago). He took a look at me, nodded a greeting, and went back to work. About three seconds later, he stopped, grinned, stood up and shook my hand, saying "Dude - I honestly didn't recognize you!"..
So funny! I found my ankle bones, then my cheek bones- now I am in search of my hip bones!..
You are stinkin' awesome!!! Look at you!! Success with weight loss, success with work, success with no smoking, success with water!! You are a HUGE inspiration! Thank you and and CONGRATS!!!!!..
Great job on the no smoking EMT..
H and I went to a holiday dinner with all my faculty the other night and for the first time I was the same size as every other woman at the table and not the only fat wife.... |
This is HUGE. As a military wife, I often attend dinners, etc, with dh's coworkers and their wives. I am ALWAYS the "fat wife". It is so hard for me to even work up the desire to get dressed and actually go to the events. It's humiliating..
Congratulations to you for your awesome weight loss accomplishment, and for finally knowing what it feels like to *not* be the "fat wife!". I'm looking forward to my day, too!.. |

I love that! I can't wait until someone say's that to me!.. |
Yay EMT freak.......good for you..
My NSV today, wearing non-mom pants and feeling okay with the look. Turns out I don't really have heavy thighs, it is just the last place I lose weight. 25 years I thought I had no way to have nicer legs, who knew?.. |
I'm in the lineup of curlers in this photo taken yesterday evening -.
Http://curldc.org/sfw/gallery/v/2010...geViewsIndex=1. And I don't stand out for my weight.. Which am I? I'm one of the ladies with an orange broom head.. doesn't help yet? I've got a Football Sweatshirt on under my curling jacket and am towards the middle of the line.. FYI - this was prior to a game between visiting curlers from Scotland (wearing the matching blue outfits) and teams from the Mid-Atlantic region of the US. We played 4 US teams vs. 4 Scottish teams. Two US teams won, One Scottish team one, and one game (mine) ended in a tie. Tonight is a banquet to honor our guests, and I know I won't have any problems staying ON plan. I'm 70 pounds down - why screw it up now??. EMT - Great job with the non-smoking! You are making such awesome healthy changes - I'm proud of you! ::hugs::.. |
EMT, Awesome on the quitting smoking. I am amazed you are taking on these two tasks at once. Speaks to your strength in a great way..
My first NSV: Last night, I was able to yank my size ten jeans off without unzipping or unbuttoning. Is it time for size 8? Is that possible?. My second NSV: I realized this morning that my saddle bags are completely gone... |
Awesome NSV's! I LOVE THEM ALL! Let's keep 'em coming! Hugs and Smiles all around!..
EMT:.
You are stinkin' awesome!!! Look at you!! Success with weight loss, success with work, success with no smoking, success with water!! You are a HUGE inspiration! Thank you and and CONGRATS!!!!!. DITTO! Wow EMT, that is fantastic - Congratulations! I'm at 19 months and remember those first couple weeks - it was the hardest. And then I "allowed" myself to gain the weight - substituted food for the nicotine craving (never had a food problem before). I replaced one bad habit/health issue for another.. Your accomplishments are lightyears ahead of me and probably 99.9% of the population who has tried to quit (I've never heard of someone losing weight when they quit, have you?). And like food, it's amazing how your days are planned around your next cig break.. Look at how far you've come! So treat it like falling out of ketosis - if you fall off the wagon and sneak that puff, you will lose so much ground. Not. Worth. It.. I am so proud of you, you can stick with it! (and be sure your talk removes "trying to" and instead "I HAVE quit"). Hugs,. Laura.. |
Dang can't wait to get rid of my saddle bags and the <insert the other word for donkey here because it *** the word I used out> they're worn on...
That's hysterical fluff. Kinda fun to be a potty mouth on Medifast because it just won't work...
Congrats on quitting EMT. It's one of the best decisions you could ever make!.
My NSV is small but significant nonetheless... I can get back into my "skinny" jeans. Still have a muffin top but hey, they button.. Now to be able to wear them and tuck a Polo shirt in... |
You are all so awesome..
I wore a sweater to work today that I couldn't wear even 2 weeks ago because it was so clingy and showed my stomach roll because my pants were too darn tight. My pants are loose and the sweater looked great, I got several compliments on it. After barely a week... |
I unsubscribed from Woman Within.....no more plus sizes for me!!!..
I haven't noticed drastic changes yet, but I am CONSTANTLY having to pull up my pants! I think it's a little too soon to go down a size, so I need to find a good belt at least!..
I would like to say that, "CONSTANTLY having to pull up [your] pants!" is a HUGE NSV! Congrats! and Way to Rock it! Hugs and Smiles!.
I would like to add to mine that I consider it an NSV that I'm no longer counting the days since I quit smoking, I am now 'just' a non-smoker! WooHoo!.. |
Let's hear it for MORE NSV's to help motivate us through the weekend! Share what you got! Hugs and Smiles!..
EMT Girl, you are awesome! Releasing all that weight and giving up smoking in the same year... That is just so awesome.....
Thanks! Just want to say, I shamelessly "bumped" this thread so that I could cheer on others' NSV's for the very selfish reason that they motivate ME! But also to support others on their journey. I know there are some great NSV's out there, so let's hear them! Hugs and Smiles!..
So I had a coworker that I don't interact with a lot or really see a lot come up to me today and tell me she was sorry that she did not say 'good morning' in the hallway because she did not recognize me and thought I was just another person in our big office building..
She told me I was such an inspiration to her, that she talked to her husband and they are both starting Medifast next week after an appointment at the center this weekend. We talked for like 10 minutes about MF, this is the most we have ever talked.... It was just so awesome to hear from someone that she did not only, not recognize me because of my weight loss, but that I inspired her to start MF.. Also this week, my DW has been getting sick of my jeans not fitting (44-42) because they are like 4 inches from my waist, she was so sweet and went bought me some size 40 pants.... Well guess what, they don't fit either.. I had like an inch or so, but funny enough my old size 38s are too tight (I guess they shrunk).. My next real size in my closet is size 36, don't ask me how I skipped size 40-38 on the way up, but I did... So my next pants NSV will be size 36s fit... I don't know what this week's SV will be, but it's been a great NSV week... |
I was wondering what NSV stood for! I am not a newbie - this is my 3rd time on MF, but the other times I never posted or read the boards. This time I am in 100%, and I have a small NSV...right outside my office door is a candy bowl and I used to take at least 3 mini chocolate bars daily - sometimes, I lost track of how much I actually consumed in an afternoon! Today, our HR assistant filled it with all my favorites, reeses, hershey's dark chocolate, etc. I have stayed out of the candy bowl ALL DAY! I am still here at the office, and I almost dove in, telling myself just one wouldn't hurt....but I know what one will do to me and my plan. So I am about to tear into a Medifast PB/Choc bar - I am sooooo glad I brought it to work today of all days..
Have a great weekend everyone!. Karen.. |
I went back to edit my old post because I remembered another one, but ran out of time....
This week I also survived another (late) Holiday party without eating a bite or nibble and avoided all the cakes, cupcakes, pie, and other junk left at the entrance to our office. I did however bring some home for my DD, she is 9 and not on MF. Another great one was I walked into a reoccurring weekly meeting to be surprised that the vendor had bought us all pizza and desert, the room was filled with the pizza smell.. So I took care of my business and made an excuse to leave early, I avoided it be removing myself without a nibble.. Again, I don't know what this week's scale victory (SV) will be, but it's been a great Non-scale victory (NSV) week... |
Great Job, that is a hard one to avoid, but you are doing great being able to stay away, great job.
Bringing in the PB/Choc bar to help with your cravings. ... Remember to drink lots of water, it helps also... |
Thanks! I am trying to keep my face out of the fridge, so I am working the boards big time at night! LOL - Cancelled dinner with friends tonight because I have no idea what L&G I could have ordered in an Indian restaurant! Well, I think I could have tandoori chicken, but all my favorites would have been too much to handle this soon! LOL.
I will pick a place where L&G choices are plentiful tomorrow night!. Have a great weekend!. Karen.. |
Reeses AND dark chocolate?!? You are a better woman than I. Quitting smoking has got to be easier than having those two things right outside your office. I bow down to you! Hugs and Smiles...
My NSV: All my jeans are too loose! Not time yet for a smaller size, but maybe in two more weeks.....
The Salvation Army Store in my area was having a sale today, so I got 3 pair of pants in a too-small size, so that I can work toward fitting into them. (All 3 for under $10, one of them a brand new, tags still on, pair of Levi's!) Go for that smaller size! Great NSV! WooHoo for loose jeans! Hugs and Smiles!..
It was hard to avoid those little seemingly harmless chocolate pieces of heaven! LOL.
I work in HR and they insist on putting that blasted candy bowl (it's HUGE!) right outside my door. I once suggested they put hard candy in there, so I wouldn't have to see the chocolate...but nooooooo...the whining to receptionist who fills the bowl daily was so bad she has to keep the chocolates fully stocked!. But I said, maybe just one...then I waited 5 minutes, and said well, if I REALLY want one, I will have it right before I leave for the day...so I would only have one...then at the end of the day, after the Medifast bar, I still wanted it, but not as much...then I said to myself, "Just one piece is what got me in this unhealthy state!" Stopped me dead in my tracks!. I hope it keeps working...for now...I don't have to see that bowl until Monday!. Quitting smoking is so hard - but definitely worth the effort and withdrawals.... Hugs and smiles to you too!. Karen.. |
Wow I REALLY EMPATHIZE with the bowl of chocolates...that was my hardest thing - I used to troll for them like crazy, every day, around 4:00... since starting Medifast in July, I just had to practice walking out of the kitchen, and away from the sees/godiva/reeses/whatever and I am so glad that I did! It gets easier, it really does. I find myself kinda looking at it dispassionately while I"m in the kitchen microwaving my brownie and I'm surrounded by people who are getting heavier because of the same habits I had - so it's a constant reminder to STAY ON TRACK!!.
My NSV is I had to pick up an outfit to wear to a fancy event on Sunday with a client - and I found something that fits that I think will work I might have to check another store tomorrow to be sure but I think I'm covered - and if I still had those extra 30 pounds, it would have been a LOT harder - I find myself so much happier overall since starting this in July so much to be grateful for!.. |
My NSV is I had to go shopping in my dresser for a smaller cup bra...I dropped to a single D. Woot!..
I was in a restaurant and was walking towards the door when I realized that I was actually walking in between the tables!! I normally would have looked at the space between the tables and determine that I would not fit and head straight for the exit aisle on the perimeter..
On another note, I have been giving Goodwill my clothes as soon as they no longer fit. My closet is almost empty as it only contains the clothes that currently fit and one size smaller. I had a panic attack and had to keep telling myself, I will not need those larger size clothing ever again!.. |
ME TOO! I love to hear people's NSV's. Winning the little battles each day, or the HUGE Victories...they just prove that by losing we are all winners! (Now, just how corny was that?) Keep posting the NSV's everyone! They help me, and others, so much! Hugs and Smiles!..
Everyone has such wonderful NSVs... Oh how I love this topic thread...
Today my size 40 pants no longer fit, my size 38 pants now fit perfectly.. One more pants size down.... |
My DW and I were sitting in the living room and she said to me in a loving way, that it is so nice to sit in the same room and not hear me breath.. She use to say that I sounded like my dad (who is a chain smoker and fairly overweight) who breaths loudly..
Getting healthier on MF. Thank you Medifast and thank you everyone for the inspiration... |
This weekend, I saw my parents and sister/brother-in-law for the first time since starting MF. My mom said that, after DH and I left, they all talked about how great I was looking. :-)..
DISCLAIMER: this may be a little TMI....
A welcome NSV is that I now feel comfortable using non-handicapped bathroom stalls. Before I lost weight there was always a risk that I couldn't sit comfortably on the throne, or have more embarrassing complications.. Rather than hunt for a restroom with an open handicapped stall I gave the normal one a tryand I "fit"!. A small victory, but definitely takes a load off my mind... so to speak..... |
So TRUE! I used a normal sized stall the other day in a moment of desperation....didn't think of it as the NSV that it really IS! Thanks for sharing this! Keep up the awesome work! Hugs and Smiles!..
The HR woman at work stopped by my desk tonight (it was after hours and we were alone) and she asked me what I've been doing and how much weight have I lost - she was very complimentary she felt like it was noticeable all of a sudden -she'd see me walking in the hall and wonder "what are they doing back there- she's losing her butt!".
I thought that was really funny. Wish it had been THAT easy!.. |
I've kind of been lurking around on the boards and haven't posted much, but I had an awesome NSV yesterday! I have been working out quite a bit and was in "power sculpt" yesterday. Well after class this girl that was standing behind me said "I'm sorry if this sounds wierd, but I haven't been to this class in a while, but obviously you have because you have lost a lot of weight! You have really nice arm muscles". Me? Arm muscles?!? Alright I'll take it!..
My first NSV's today, yes more than one!! Took my 14 year old DD for a haircut and decided to go shopping a bit after.. tried on and fit a size smaller pair of pants!! and my dd commented about how she saw me having to keep pulling up my jeans while walking around the store, YES they have gotten to big!!..
AND Chelsee~I can't wait 'til I have definition in my arms! Good for you!..
My NSV happened after a visit to the DR....lower BP meds to a mear 5mg and lowered my thyroid meds too! Plus ALL lab results are now in the NORMAL state!!! Whooooo hooo! He even said I will probably be able to get off my meds soon...new labs in 6 months...IF I can stay functioning on them. Hoping for sooner!..
Wow some great NSVs from everyone.. I love to read these in the morning before work.. they inspire me throughout the day..
Thank you for posting..... |
Let's keep the NSV's coming! They are wonderful to read: You(the poster) get to share your success and let us pat you on the back. (Positive reinforcement!) and we (the readers) get some motivation....BONUS! Warm Fuzzies all around! Hugs and Smiles!.
Here's mine for today:. Well this NSV is not weight related but IS related to the whole weightloss/getting healthy thing! As in the original post of this thread, I QUIT SMOKING! It's now been over a month! "They" say it takes 7 days to create a habit and 28 days to break a habit. I've made it past the "break a habit." Still not sure it's going to take, but I'm now calling myself a "former smoker!".. |
Here's another one for me today! I have always ordered Mens' watches because ladies bands are always too small for me. Bracelets and such I need a L or the 8". Today when I was putting my (men's) watch on I realized it was a bit loose and the strap was as tight as it will go. Also, in my preparations for starting the C25K I ordered one of these, in size medium:.
It fits, but barely! It fastens with velcro and it's as small as I can make it, with just a bit of the velcro to hold on too! I should have ordered the small! I know it just a bracelet, but I've never worn a small ANYTHING in my adult life!. Let's hear your NSV's for today!. Hugs and Smiles!.. |
Hey!! Congrats on being a former smoker!!! that's next on my list. I quit for years then started back up in May of 2010 and have smoked since then. that's awesome! You have sparked inspiration.....
My NSV is about a shirt I wore just 2 months ago.It is a button up,well, I couldnt button it, so I left it halfway open with a "hold the fat in" taketop.I felt like I was wrapped up with Saran wrap.lol..anyways, I put the shirt on yesterday, and low and behold, I got it all buttoned up, with quite a bit of room to sprare all around..and I am only in my 3rd week of MF!! I am down 11lbs, and I know alot of iches, but I didnt measure myself till the other day cause I was sure I would fail in few days..No way Jose!! I am on this for goal!!..
Here's one for the books.....My UPS man delivered a package today, and as he was getting back into his truck he said, "Looking good!" Now around Christmas time, my delivery was delayed and I practically attacked him when the truck pulled into my driveway. I explained to him that it was my food and he is always really cool about making sure I get my boxes now. It's kinda cool that the UPS guy is noticing my weightloss! WooHoo! Hugs and Smiles!..
I can wrap a bath towel around me... it might be slightly obsence, but it wraps and it is not a bath sheet!.
I have lost 2 ring sizes... all of my rings are too big and I had to get "ring snuggies" to keep them on.. I have bones in my hands and knee caps, along with bones in my feet... who knew?.. |
Okay, here is my TMI NSV:.
You know how you get the "back flap" along your sides when you are too heavy? The ones that look like fold in your side when you are viewed from the back?. I LOST MINE! LOL!. I have lost about 17 lbs without changing clothing sizes or having anyone notice a thing. This has a lot to do with almost all my weight being in my middle. But as I was checking the back of my hair this morning (that's right...I do my hair without wearing a stitch!), I realized that my evil nemesis, the backflap, had cut it's losses and run for the hills!. Okay, TMI time is over! Lol!.. |
Love this thread..
I am having an NSV kind of day! I had the first 3 people notice my weight loss and say something about it- all of them sincere and very nice about it. AND (drum roll) I am wearing an XL turtleneck and and XL jacket (down from 3X). Okay they are particularly roomy XLs, but still... Hey- maybe that's why people are noticing my WL- I'm wearing clothes that fit instead of hide... |
It is wonderful when people notice... We must be on the same schedule I got my next shipment in the mail today also... I was down to my last 5 crunch bars.
I have two NSVs today!. I made Cauliflower Pizza and it turned out great! I cooked nearly all night and made 5.5 crusts and devoured one. I can't believe it is healthy and good for someone.. Here is the recipe link:. The second NSV, I had someone comment in the office that I lost my whole belly. I told them yep, in fact I looked down the other day and saw something I had not seen in years, my belt buckle.. I almost forgot, my DD (9yo) told me today while I was cooking, that she didn't know I knew how to cook... Hehe.. surprised her.. |
Smarty~ The funniest is that is was NOT my Medifast delivery today. The Man In Brown is at my house 2-3 times/week between MF, amazon.com and eBay! But he's noticing! Coolest is that he was off the last 2 weeks so he got to see me after 2 weeks and that's when he noticed. Made me feel really good....we all know how it is, the people who see us everyday don't necessarily notice the daily differences but apparently I had a big difference in these two weeks..
Congrats on the pizza crust and the belt buckle! I love that one! Hugs and Smiles!.. |
I had a nsv the other evening. My wife cuts my hair - the 'cape' that goes around my neck used to be extremely tight and almost not be able to fit. When she put it on the other night she was like "oh, wow...it FITS" - with room to spare...
I am wearing a size 10 skirt and it is comfy. Not cutting off my circulation...
Getting dressing in the morning is now about what do I want to wear, vs. what am I going to be least uncomfortable in at work all day!..
These are all great.
For the first time in probably 2 years I had my blood pressure taken today with an ARM cuff not a THIGH cuff!!!.. |
What a wonderful thread!.
Today I made my family homemade pizza with canadian bacon and pineapple (one of my faves!) and was able to enjoy the smell of it baking without taking one. little. bite. I am so proud of myself! I made myself COT bread 'pizza' with ff ricotta and basil leaves...it was dreamy. Each little win like that strengthens my resolve even more. I hope strength and focus for every one of us here on our Medifast journeys!.. |
Without going into TOO much detail..i'm able to reach where I wasn't able to comfortably reach before! can't wait to see what the next 25lbs will let me do : )..
I have had a few NSV's since starting the plan a month ago. my biggest one is that my back pain is gone ! my back used to ache from doing the minorist of tasks like taking out the garbage or getting out of bed and now it doesnt. Also my soda addiction is gone ! this is a big one for me, I used to drink 2-2liters a day easy. I havent had a drop since starting medifast and I no longer even crave the stuff. and last but certainly not least is that I have been on plan For a full month and have not cheated or quit, thats something I have never been able to do before !..
For those of you who haven't figured it out....I'm an EMT!.
People who "code" tend to do it in the worst possible place-never in the middle of the living room. (usually in a small bathroom or between the bed and the wall, etc) Today was a bed/wall call. Without even thinking about moving furniture out of the way, I was able to get into a pretty tight space and get control of the patient's airway. This may not sound like a big deal, but let me assure you, THIS WAS HUGE for me! I didn't even realise it until there was another medic in the same area as me. A couple months ago, I wouldn't have fit in there. Today, there was me with someone else! Just had to share! Hugs & Smiles.. |
I'm mid-way through my third week, and I think I've had my first NSV (NSVs actually!!).
Firstly, I was able to comfortably put on my 'tight' jeansones that technically fit me but took a whole lot of wrangling to get buttoned and then made me miserable the whole time I had them on. I think last month at my highest weight I couldn't even really wear them anymore. WahooI have three pairs of these in my closet so I just doubled my jean wardrobe!. Secondly, the seatbelt in my car is now back to feeling 'normal'prior to staring, I was getting to the point where I had to really wrestle to get buckled when I had my winter coat on. I like being back to a place where this is now a non-issue.. Don't think I actually lost that many inches yet, just enough to take care of these two little issues, but it really motivates me to keep going!.. |
EMTGirl: The place that had been a consistent problem for me was between the stretcher and the bench seat in the back of the truck - like kneeling down to start a line - I slid right in there the other day without even thinking about it. In fact, hadn't even thought about it until you mentioned your code..
Congrats on the bed/wall!.. |
In 2007 or maybe 2008, I bought these boots. They were not cheap; and at the time I was probably weighed about 220. Anyway, I tried the boots on and they didn't fit around my fat calves! I was annoyed, angry and embarrassed. So in my closet they went never to be seen again..
Flash forward to today. I knew that since I'd lost 50+ pounds that they now fit, but I hadn't had the courage to wear them outside. Today I wore them to the bank! Granted, no one saw me, but the world didn't end.. (of course I couldn't walk in them, but I WORE THEM OUTSIDE!).. |
This one is going to make me sound incredibly vain but here it is....
Yesterday I bought a full length mirror and hung it on my bedroom door. (I haven't had a full length mirror in my house in forever...too depressing.) I think in the past 12 hours I've 'posed' in front of that mirror an average of twice an hour! I have normal-sized clothes on (some from the juniors department, mind you!) and just can't believe that's me in the mirror! Sorry if that makes me sound like a true KOOK, but there it is! Hugs & Smiles.. |
Congrats everyone for these fabulous NSV's!!.
People are really starting to notice and tell me how good or how healthy I look. Nice!. Also flew this month and didn't have to have a seatbelt extender.. Got into my size 22 jeans and wear them comfortably.. And I noticed yesterday that I can bend over to tie my shoes without having my breath cut off and the blood rush to my head.. I think I enjoy these NSV's even more than watching the scale go down. Although I have to say I am looking forward to seeing my doctor on March 8th and having them slide that big weight down to the 200lb mark instead of starting off with the 250lb mark!. WAY TO GO!!.. |
Someone who can relate to my 'stories' without me having to feel morbid or just inappropriate-wrong? Yay! Hugs & Smiles..
Yesterday I was able to wear my wedding ring all day for the first time in...well....Months!! Yeah for me...I had missed my wedding ring, and was tired of wearing it on a necklace..
My loss this week wasn't that great, but the ring makes up for it!.. |
I am a nurse and try to keep track of my bp. I was finding my bp was creeping up early last year and was running 130's over 80's. Since I hadn't really checked it in a few months, I thought I'd see what it was yesterday and wow my blood pressure is perfect. 110's over 60's and my heart rate has come down from a resting rate average of 90+ to 60's. It truly is amazing what weight loss and exercise can do for your body. Plus I feel great...
So I just had another NSV. My 6 yr has a friend over and they were discussing calories. Her friend asked why I won't let my dd eat too many cookies and my dd kindly said, "well, cookies have a lot of calories in them and if you eat too many calories you can get fat"..
Well, the discussion went on a little longer and then my dd said, "my mommy USED to be fat but she isn't now". I love that girl. Those were the best words... |
I got into my smallest jeans again!.
And I refound my hip bones. They are lovely if I say so myself... |
I know it's kind of silly, but my face being a bit skinnier makes my hair look longer..
I like that!!.. |
